What are the risks of teeth whitening
Less Dramatic Whitening Results Than You Hoped For?
In spite of the Pearly White ads you see, the truth is all teeth whiten differently; some much more than others and it is not possible to predict outcomes.
Badly stained teeth may require additional treatments.
Teeth with multiple colorations, bands, splotches or spots due to tetracycline(1) use or fluorosis(2) may have less dramatic whitening results.

Tooth Sensitivity
During the first 24 hours after the treatment, some clients who are sensitive to hot or cold drinks can experience some mild tooth sensitivity.
Whilst this is uncommon with our advanced system (if at all), tooth sensitivity can be a side effect for a rare few. It is usually gentle tingling in the teeth.
Normally, tooth sensitivity following the use of whitening products subsides within 24 hours. A Pain Relief Gel such as ‘Orajel’ or ‘Bonjela Adult’ can provide instant relief.
Gum Irritation
In very rare cases, teeth whitening may cause whitening of the gums or gum line.
This effect is due to exposure of a small area of those tissues to the whitening gel.
Such whitening of the gums is usually temporary and will subside almost immediately, with colour change in the gum tissue reversing to pink again within 30 minutes.
Very rarely, some clients can experience some gum tenderness when brushing. This can last several days. A desensitising gel such as ‘Bonjela Adult’ can give quick relief

Dry Lips
The treatment involves 36-40 minutes during which the mouth is kept open continuously for the entire treatment by a plastic retractor.
We apply lip balm during the procedure; however, on rare occasions this could result in dryness or chapping of the lips or cheek margins, which can be treated by application of lip balm, petroleum jelly, or Vitamin E cream.
Enamel damage is a myth
Teeth Whitening has been practiced for more than 125-years using products more caustic than modern whitening gels without one recorded case of enamel damage caused by teeth whitening.
It appears this myth was started by some dentists trying to discourage people from using home DIY products and Independent Teeth Whitening Professionals
The Eastman Institute for Oral Health, a world leader in research and post-doctoral education in general and paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery recently reported in clinical studies that our new whitening gels are Safer than Orange Juice.
Relapse
After the treatment, because we eat & drink staining foods & beverages, it is normal for the teeth to re-stain over time.
For many, depending on diet, this takes 1 months – 1 years.
This is natural and should be very gradual but exposing the teeth to various staining agents can accelerate it.
Recommendation
We recommend a 3 – 6 monthly single 15-20-minute ‘touch-up’ procedure to maintain your natural whiteness for life
